The Red Sox hoped to be the better Sox as they faced the White Sox. The Yankees had two games postponed which will result in a very long month of games with their next off-day being on Memorial Day. 

NEW YORK YANKEES (19-8)

The first game on Sunday, which was originally scheduled, had Gerrit Cole on the mound. He pitched 6.1 innings, struck out 10, and gave up one run. Gleyber Torres went 2-for-4 and hit the game-winning home run in the 9th inning. The Yankees won 2-1.

Jordan Montgomery took the mound for the second game of the doubleheader. He pitched six innings, struck out five, and was charged with two runs. Michael King gave up two runs in his outing. Giancarlo Stanton hit his 6th home run. The Yankees lost 4-2. 

The series against the Rangers finishes up today then the Jays come into town for a quick 2-game set. Nestor Cortes will start against the Rangers. Luis Severino and Jameson Taillon are scheduled to pitch against the Jays.

BOSTON RED SOX (10-19)

Rich Hill and Kike Hernandez were placed on the COVID-IL. At the time, neither tested positive but had symptoms. Nathan Eovaldi took the mound against the White Sox. He pitched five innings, struck out four, and gave up three runs. Alex Verdugo went 1-for-4. Jarren Duran went 1-for-4. The hit was a triple. The Sox threatened at times but couldn’t push runs across. They lost 4-2. 

Kike Hernandez was activated from the COVID-IL which meant Duran was optioned. Rich Hill and Jason Varitek tested positive. Nick Pivetta pitched six scoreless innings and struck out eight. J.D. Martinez went 1-for-5 and Rafael Devers went 2-for-4 with a walk. Hansel Robles blew the 1-0 lead in the 9th inning and Matt Barnes gave up two runs in the 10th. The Red Sox lost 3-1. 

Tanner Houck started for the Sox because Michael Wacha was placed in the IL. Houck pitched 2.2 innings, struck out two, and gave up three runs. Devers went 3-for-4 and Xander Bogaerts went 2-for-4. The Sox lost 3-2.

There is a silver lining if you really want to see it: In 2019, the Nationals’ record was 19-31 before they turned it around in May. They were the World Champions. There is still a whole lotta baseball left in the season. 

The Sox head to Atlanta to face the Braves. Garrett Whitlock and Nathan Eovaldi are scheduled to pitch.

TAMPA BAY RAYS (18-11)

The Rays started a 4-game set against the Mariners. Shane McClanahan went 5.1 innings, struck out five, and gave up two runs. Mike Zunino hit his third home run of the season. Harold Ramirez went 2-.for-4. Yandy Diaz went 1-for-3 with a walk. The Rays won 4-3.

Matt Wisler opened for the Rays in game two. He pitched two innings, struck out two, and gave up two runs. Manuel Margot went 1-for-1 with a home run when he pinch-hit for Harold Ramirez in the 9th inning. Randy Arozarena went 4-for-5 and Francisco Mejia went 3-for-4. The Rays won 8-7.

David Rasmussen pitched five innings, struck out five, and gave up one run. Brandon Lowe went 2-for-3 with two walks and two home runs. Kevin Kiermaier went 2-for-4. Manuel Margot hit a grand slam in the 8th inning. The Rays won 8-2. 

Ryan Yarbrough pitched five scoreless innings and struck out four. Manuel Margot went 2-for-3 and scored the only run for the Rays with a home run. The Rays lost 2-1 in the 10th inning.

The next stop is Anaheim to face Shohei Ohtani and the Angels. Corey Kluber and Shane McClanahan are scheduled to pitch.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (17-13)

The Jays were in Cleveland over the weekend. Jose Berrios went 4.2 innings with no strikeouts and gave up six runs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr hit his 7th home run of the season. Bo Bichette went 3-for-5 and Santiago Espinal went 2-for-4. Alejandro Kirk hit his first home run of the season. The Jays lost 6-5.

Saturday was a doubleheader for the Jays. Kevin Gausman pitched 6.1 innings, struck out five, and gave up one run. George Springer went 2-for-5. Alejandro Kirk went 3-for-4. The Jays won 8-3. 

Ross Stripling pitched four innings, struck out three, and gave up four runs. Bo Bichette went 1-for-4. Santiago Espinal went 1-for3. The Jays lost 8-2.

Alek Manoah pitched five innings, struck out three, and gave up two runs. Espinal went 1-for-3 with a walk. Vladimir Guerrero Jr went 1-for-4. The Jays lost 4-3.

The Jays head to NY to face the Yankees for two games. Yusei Kikuchi and Jose Berrios are scheduled to pitch. 

 BALTIMORE ORIOLES (11-17)

Game one of the doubleheader against the Royals had Jordan Lyles on the mound. He pitched 7.1 innings, struck out five, and gave up four runs; three earned. Austin Hays went 4-for-4. Cedric Mullins and Trey Mancini both went 2-for-5. Ryan Mountcastle went 4-for-5. The O’s lost 6-4. 

Bruce Zimmermann pitched in the second game of the doubleheader. He went six innings, struck out five, and gave up two runs. Ramon Urias went 1-for-3. Robinson Chirinos went 1-for-4. The O’s lost 4-2. 

After finishing the series against the Royals today, the Cardinals come into town for a 3-game set. 

OUTSIDE THE AL EAST

Carlos Correa was hit by a pitch against the Orioles last Thursday. The Twins announced that he is day-to-day with a bruised finger. The Twins called up Royce Lewis. He made his MLB debut on Friday night against the A’s. He went 1-for-4.
