The Red Sox scouting department must be run by a Beach Boys fan

~  I wish They All Could Be California Infielders ~

For the third consecutive year under Chaim Bloom the Sox have swept into California like El Nino and swept a first round infielder into the Boston fam system. In 2020 it was second baseman Nick Yorke out of Archbishop Mitty HS in San Jose. In 2021 it was shortstop Marcelo Mayer from East Lake HS in Chula Vista. This year Bloom’s team of computer driving idiots told him to take Orange Lutheran H.S. shortstop  Mickey Romero.

Romero, like so many of Bloom’s choices in the mature draft, was a reach. No one had this kid going in the first round. NO ONE. That doesn’t mean he won’t become something. There is no bigger crap shoot in sports than taking a high schooler in the MLB draft.

In The Second round at pick number 41

The Sox doubled down and took ~ wait for it ~ Shortstop Cutter Coffee. Out of ~ Wait for it ~ Liberty H.S. in Brentwood California. I know, shocking right ? Though most scouts have said Coffee has a better shot at sticking at third base or even on the hill as a pro. The sox think otherwise, Coffee batted .412 as a senior and belted 12 HR.

At Pick number 72

The Sox went into the lawn and chose Florida Majority Stoneman Highschool All American OF Roman Anthony. The 18 year old spent the better part of two years on the showcase circuit showing off his power bat and arm. He hit .554 as a senior with 15 home runs and 65 RBI. Young Roman bats lefty but throws righty and has the glove and arm to stick in center.

In the end

Bloom and the Sox went Cheap first, thinking more about slotting dollars than filling holes. this draft was once again about building up bloated positions at the minor league level. there were pitchers to be had at every spot the Sox picked today and they were ignored for no other reason that money.
