Xander Bogaerts ripped an RBI single in the top of the first inning last night to give the Boston Red Sox a 1-0 lead. Then was promptly ripped from shortstop at the bottom of the second. It seems Bogaerts is just the latest Red sox player to test positive for the virus. And if you can believe this it just got worse for the old town team from there. The Sox fell 8-5 to Tampa and are now 10 games behind the division-leading Rays.

Bogaerts wasn’t the first Sox player to test positive for COVID-19 Tuesday. The club announced earlier that reliever Hirokazu Sawamura had tested positive for the virus. Sawamura and reliever Josh Taylor were placed on the COVID-19 related injured list — Taylor was a close contact individual.

Red Sox bullpen hit hard by the outbreak

Left-hander Martín Pérez and right-hander Matt Barnes were added to the COVID-19 injured list before Monday’s 6-1 loss to the Rays. It was announced afterward that Josh Taylor and first base coach Tom Goodwin were in quarantine as close contacts, and quality control coach Ramón Vázquez had also tested positive. This is a goddamn Greek tragedy.

Act One

Kiké Hernández and infielder Christian Arroyo were placed on COVID-19 DL Friday. And to make matters worse (for them) remain in Cleveland, where the Red Sox were playing when they tested positive.

There are now seven players and three coaches who have tested positive and are on the Covid DL list. At this point, the only hope the Sox have for the postseason is holding on to one of the wildcard spots. The Boston Red Sox are just 1.5 games ahead of the Oakland  A’s.
