Don’t let the headline fool you. As you know, scary can be both good and bad, and I’m here to tell you I saw both sides of that scary coin on Thursday’s New England Patriots preseason opener. Lost behind tipped interceptions and booming field goals were a haunted house of miscues, missed assignments, and penalties that I know had Belichick fuming in his post-game locker room chat with the specials and all three defensive groups. Let’s dive in.

Pats: The Good

The Patriots Linebackers are deep, fast, and furious. Matthew Judon gave Patriots Nation a scare when he limped off the field in the first quarter but came back and looked amazing, stuffing the run not to mention generating, by my count, three pass pressures on the WFT quarterbacks. Josh Uche continues to grow into an impressive chess piece moving around from inside to outside as effortlessly as anyone I’ve seen in a long time. The rotation between those two, Kyle van Noy and Dont’a Hightower, is going to have us all talking for years about their prowess.

More Davon Godchaux PLEASE

Yes, I understand it’s one preseason game. Yes, I get that he wasn’t on the field very long but I need more Godchaux and I need it now!  While we spent most of the spring singing the praises of offensive signings, what The Hoodie did on this side of the ball is looking brilliant and the smartest move may have been inking Godchaux to a two-year deal. In limited action, Davon made three tackles and ate up the line in front of him. This is a gift from the Gods for you all. Not to mention fellow DT Lawrence Guy who also looked spectacular.

Pats: The Bad

No Stephon Gilmore. The lack of Gilmore on the field has shown how shallow the defensive backs pond is. With Gilmore out, J.C. Jackson was again pressed into number one duties and I am still not sure he is up to the high standards we have grown accustomed to in this part of the country. Without Jason McCourty, lesser talents have been asked to step up and have not (Hello, Jalen Mills). No, I don’t want to hear about JoeJuan Williams INT.

If Gilmore is not on the field and HAPPY before week one, this group could be the Achilles heel of the defense. Although, at times Myles Bryant looked pretty good. Get the contract done Bill.

Pats: The Ugly

Lost behind the leg of the Mighty Quinn and his three booming field goals was a missed extra point. Still, thanks for the memories Nick Folk. Damn this kid’s got LEG!

The Punt team committed five penalties, luckily only three were called, Bill will call all five today.

The Kicking team got flagged for holding in the fourth. RUN FORREST RUN.

Marvin Hall’s muffed punt. Yeah, you got one job there Marv.

That’s it, my rabid readers, a few of my Knee-Jerk reactions to the New England Patriots preseason opener but a few things that needed to be mentioned. I did mention Godchaux right? Right.
