Thom’s College Football Picks Record: 9-1 Straight up, 7-3 ATS on the season

So, it’s Football Friday and that means it’s time to make a few more college football picks!

Crimson Tide at the Swamp

Let’s start with the game in Gainesville where the Crimson Tide will be in town to take on the Gators in a CBS game at 3:30 ET.  The Tide are a 15’ point favorite, and to be honest, I’d feel more comfortable picking this game if I was certain about the health of Florida’s redshirt Freshman phenom QB Anthony Richardson.

Richardson’s numbers are video game whacky, making him the wild card in this game.  Emory Jones can’t beat the Tide, and quite frankly, couldn’t keep Florida inside the number either…I don’t think Richardson is 100%, and I just don’t think the Gators can score with Alabama.  It’s a big number, but I’ll lay it…take the Tide -15’

Cat Fight at Beaver Stadium

In Happy Valley, the Auburn Tigers are on the road for the first time this season and they’ll be walking right into a Penn State Whiteout Saturday night on ABC. I always wondered why the Nittany Lions didn’t wear their all-white uniforms for a Whiteout game, but I guess that’s a question that will remain unanswered!  Auburn is getting 5’ in this game, and those that like the Tigers point to Bo Nix having road experience in places like Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge, and Athens, GA.

The problem is, none of that experience is GOOD experience.  I’m not buying in yet.  This could end up a defensive struggle, but I’ll take the Lions, -5’ in this catfight…

For the first time in 13 years

Nebraska is in Norman, Oklahoma for the first time in 13 years.  This is also the 50th Anniversary of the Game of the Century in 1971.  This is NOT the Game of the Century; it’s not even the Game of the Day!  But it will be sports eye candy to see these teams on the field together again.  It just looks so right…like the Yankees and Red Sox, Bruins and Habs, or Cowboys and Packers…

Nebraska can score some points, and in week 1, the Sooners defense was vulnerable against G5 team Tulane.  Oklahoma wins, but not by the big 22’ point spread…Take the Huskers and the points…

Week Three Final Picks

Purdue will renew its longstanding rivalry with Notre Dame, in South Bend, and the Boilermakers are getting 7’ points.  The Domers got a scare from Toledo, TOLEDO! last week, before rallying late for a close win.  Point taken.  Brian Kelly may have wanted to execute his team after the Florida St. game, and it didn’t help when Florida St. got dumped by FCS Jacksonville (AL) St. last week, but this time the Irish come up big and cover the 7’ points.

And finally, how about a pick in the Braniac Bowl between Stanford and Vandy.  These two teams looked like the worst teams in college football week 1, with the Cardinal losing 54-3 to K-State, and Vandy getting dumped by ETSU, who just took up football like 20 minutes ago.

So naturally, in week 2, Stanford goes on the road as a big dog to USC and gets Clay Helton fired, and Vandy goes to Colorado St. and wins as a touchdown underdog.  Now Vandy is getting 12’ at home.  Is Stanford really good enough to be a 12’ point favorite on the road, anywhere?  I’ll take the Dores at home to keep it close.  At least one thing is for sure, if anyone gets hurt in this game, the players could probably just perform surgery on the field or at the very least, manage each other’s 401k’s…
